The Barbute came from the older bascinet and sallet lines and was based on ancient Greek ("Corinthian") helmets. \n \nThe long sides that sweep forward below the eyes are what make it stand out. They protect the cheeks and lower face well, but they leave a T- or Y-shaped opening for breathing and seeing.
